Why do dogs bully cats?

why do dogs always attack and intimidate cats? why can't dogs be more thoughful and considerate. Are they just natural bullies? Why do dogs bully cats?
You obviously have never had both!

My Cat's have always ruled the house and even as kittens show no fear of the dogs! It's funny to see a 6 month old kitten 'boss' a large GSD!!!

Even outside they rarely run from a dog they just climb the nearest fence or tree! I have one now who regularly visits and plays with the neighbours 3 yorkies!

Running away is what normally causes a Dog to chase and attack a Cat. It sets of the hunting instinct!

It's not 'bullying' as such!
they dont. cats and dogs have different body languages and they get confused. dogs stare at cats and wag their tails to welcome them like they do to us humans. cats however see these things as a threat. an angry cat stares hard and wags its tail as a warning.

this is why dogs and cats dont get on.Why do dogs bully cats?
i had a cat and she led a campaign of intimidation against 2 west highland terriers next door. She would stalk them and hide in bushes and behind the fence with her hackles up - and they were so sweet natured they just ignored her. i think cats are actually more spiteful than dogs.
my cat rules the roost here and if the dog gets to close he gets a 5 claw strike to the face. it`s quite funny. Why do dogs bully cats?
they dont like cats.
This is not always true. When I was little I had both cat and dog and the cat terrorized the poor dog. She used to sit on the counter and jump down on the dog as he walked past. She would slap the dog in the chops if he even thought about touching her food or water lol....
my dog gets bullied by cats
It has to do with natural order %26amp; the pray drive. It varies from dog to dog, but generally - small cats are considered food in the wild to a canine....
my dog loves my cat - he spends hours licking out his ears for him
Dogs are very perceptive, intelligent creatures. They know that cats are smelly, selfish, sneaky, and are not to be trusted.
Dogs are hunters by nature. They regard cats as prey, and because cats always run away when they feel threatened, the dogs will run after them. The dogs will chase anything that runs, if they had the chance. Their owners also think its cute when their dogs do that. So, come on dog owners, be responsible animal owners. It is possible to teach dogs not to chase cats. It is also possible to have cats and dogs sleeping together if they have grown up together. It might be funny when the dog chases the mop or broom, or the vacuum cleaner, but its plain mean when they are nasty to cats!
mostly its the chase reflex cats run dogs chase

its instinct

but i do know of a cat who will stalk and attack dogs

its funny to see a tiny cat chase of the dogs

lol
Dogs chase cats because cats run.
Both species are territorial animals. Both species "mark" their patches but it's unlikely that dog pea or cat scents worry the other species too much. Cats are carnivores whereas dogs are omnivores, like us. So the competition is not really to do with food resources. It is probably straight competition for a particular area - a bit like blackbirds will see off smaller birds from their territory. As other answers say, cats can be the dominant animal in a particular neighbourhood, so there is no hard-and-fast rule.

Beyond DAve
not all dogs dislike cats and some cats bully dogs.my dog loves cats......with stake sauce.......just kidding but my dog doesn't like cats ether
They are just confused!! My cat gets upset and wags his tail @ my dog, my dogs wags her tail back in excitement wanting to play. The cat gets more angry @ the dog cos he thinks shes angry.. Different body language. My cat though he is definately the vboss out of the 2.
cause cats suck eggs
Firstly, they don't always. There are numerous stories of dogs and cats living amicably together. As for why they sometimes do, it's the thrill of the chase. They are predators by nature.

By the way, our cat used to run from our dog in the garden, then wait for the dog to catch up and run again.
dogs like to chase cats because they deserve it.....
My dogs don't bully my cats, infact its the other way round my 8 week old puppy almost lost an eye because of one of our cats, i suppose some cats and dogs just don't get along to well just like people as my older dog and cat often lie sleeping together in the dogs bed, its just the youngsters of the species that don't get on, however i might be talking nonsense in which case i'd have to agree with John C and say that dogs jus dont like cats cos they know that there sneaks.

Cats aren't defenseless and can do alot of damage to a dog, they are vindictive and cruel, have you ever seen them playing with a mouse or a bird till the poor creatures to exhausted to carry on. THATS A BULLY!
Because cats always tease them and are very annoying towards dogs.
We have a 4 year old cat and a puppy its the cat who bullies the puppy he is definatly put in his place. I have noticed though although the cat would never change his food he as now developed a taste for dog food and biscuits.
Actually my dog is harassed by my cat. The cat will randomly attached the dog for no apparent reason and he is done messing with her the cat jumps up the back of the sofa because he knows the dog will get in trouble if she jumps on the furniture. (or so I think the cat knows)
i answer your question with one why do cats kill birds, mice, rats, rabbits, and other small creaturs.not for food. it is just something thats in them. i have a staff and as yet he has not chewed on any cats he just stands waggggging his tail mind you i do see him licking his lips lol
My pug loves my cats. I live in a house with 2 dogs and 4 cats. They all get along pretty well. The German Sheppard will chase the cats if they run, but if they are just sitting around he really doesn't care about them. My pug and the cats all get along great, they sleep in the same bed, just this morning my youngest kitty was giving the pug a bath.

I think it just depends on the dog and if hes been around cats.. dogs are just curious.. they want to go up and smell the cat. Cats are not always interested in that though
