How does towing effect gas mileage?

How much would my gas mileage be effected if I was towing 1000 pounds in a 98 Nissan Altima? The normal gas mileage is around 20-23mpg.How does towing effect gas mileage?
Believe it or not, IF you are on long drives you will have a slight decrease in mileage of about 10-20 % depending on traffic and such. That is if you are going in flat country or the hills of Virginia. How does towing effect gas mileage?
It will def be effected look at the big trucks that get like 12 miles to the gallon. Why? not only b/c it has a bigger engine but it has alot more weight. I put 200 lbs of chain in my trunk and drove arpund for a month or two and tested the theory. I got about 10 miles less mileage

My Navigator averages 15mpg highway. Towing my 6000lb boat on the highway, I average 9mpg: 44% DECREASE in mpg. I'd guess with your 3000lb Altima towing 1000lbs that you'll see a 25% decrease in mpg on the highway and as much as 35% worse if your driving is through hills or city/stop and go.
