Correct swim technique for towing a tired or unconcious person?

When a person is unconcious in the water, after you have turned them face up, I have heard 2 techniques for towing. 1 -where you put your arm under their arm and hold their chin in pistol grip or 2. where you put your arm over their upper arm and under the opposite arm.

Any advice from swim teachers or life savers?Correct swim technique for towing a tired or unconcious person?
We just covered this today in the lifeguard class I teach. After you have them on their back you can put your right arm over their right arm and the rescue tube (to ensure they do not fall off) ad then use a scissor kick and one arm pull to return to the side.

Or you can approach them from behind while their face is still down and with your rescue tube under your arms reach under their armpits and use your hips to pull them onto their back. In the water it kind of looks like they are laying on top of you. Then you use a whip kick to return to the side.Correct swim technique for towing a tired or unconcious person?
I think that grip number one is used when there is a suspected head or neck injury. But getting the victim onto his/her back will be done differently. As always you should have an aide when you go into the water, so using a rescue tube you will have to get the victim under their arms if they are face down and roll them to their back and have the tube under their shoulders/upper back and you are holding the victim and the tube with your upper body, hands under the tube and armpits of the victim. If you jump into save a random person out of the goodness of your heart with no life saving equipment make sure that you are safe and can swim while holding someone. Swimming on your back and doing the elementary backstroke kick will probably be your best bet. Or to position the victim on your hip and do a side stroke motion. Your arm will go above the body to the opposite armpit and you hold on as best you can. Correct swim technique for towing a tired or unconcious person?
