is there anything i can do with out having to buy a new windows xp proI just got a scond had comp with win xp pro but it keeps saying it a copy?
This problem has happened to quite a few computers with legit windows on the machine - so your windows may be legit

The reason is because of the lastest patch from the windows up date- Windows Genuine Advantage Notification Tool (WGANT) is the problem do the following;

go to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on the Validate Windows button. Restart your computer after this is done.

Sometimes revalidating and rebooting correctly synchronises the Windows library files.

or if doesn't work try

Download the MGA Diagnostic Tool from the location below and save it onto your computer:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=5鈥?/a>

Double click on the MGA Diagnostic Tool to run it.

After running the MGA Diagnostic Tool, click on the "Windows" tab and then click on "Copy to Clipboard".

Next, visit the website below:

http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/defa鈥?/a>

Create a post in the "WGA Validation Problems" forum and paste the results of the WGA Diagnostic Data in a detailed reply to your original post.

A WGA troubleshooting specialist will analyze the data and will recommend an appropriate solution in a reply. This response may take several hours.

Follow the steps provided in the post by the WGA troubleshooting specialist to prevent the screen from being displayed again.

If the above doesn't work then your copy of windows will not be legit and you will not be able to download the lastest updates for your system and you system may be at risk

Will have to buy a new OS

Hope this helpsI just got a scond had comp with win xp pro but it keeps saying it a copy?
Nothing you can do legally. There are cracks out there to fix it. Or, if you are sick of Microsoft doing things to squeeze more money out of you, you can try another operating system.I just got a scond had comp with win xp pro but it keeps saying it a copy?
Thanks for the question. This evening I have just hit the same problem myself ... Microsoft want me to buy a 'genuine version of windows'. Apparently you could contact some of their folks if you think yours is a genuine version not a copy. Its all to do with the code and a key that a licence is assigned too.... So if your licence was just registered using an incorrect code and you still have the correct code, they could straighten you out and you would end up with a genuine version of windows. I'm not a computer whizz and this is giving me a headache but hoping to find the answer here.
It probably IS a copy...

but if it's not - and is Geniuine you can contact Microsoft %26amp; they will 'do something'.

In the mean time - without using any ILLEGAL hacks...

Do a system restore to a point just before the update was applied (about 2 months ago?), then disable auto update.

You won't get any updates, but neither will you get the notice as it only came in a recent update. This will give you enough time to contact M.S. to validate your copy at your leisure.
