How do i know if my cat and the dog are playing friendly ?

Ok, well my mom brought this little dog that is about 3 months old and my cat is 1 year and a half. My cat usually get frightened easily and the dog is smaller than my cat but they chase each other and sometimes my cat hits the dog with his paw and he jumps on the chairs and the dog is too small to get on the chairs so she barks and growls at my cat.

Are they playing or is the dog trying to bully my cat ?

What should i do ?How do i know if my cat and the dog are playing friendly ?
From watching my dog and two cats interact in this fashion I'm going to say play. But we keep a close watch on them because the dog is much larger than the cats and he forgets himself on occasion and starts nipping at cat bums. But 99.9% of the time he is quite content to just chase them without trying too hard to catch them. Besides, the cats are the ones that initiate this behaviour. They deliberately get the dog started up.

This dog used to kill cats in his old life; which is the primary reason why he was given to my charge.
thats the same situation for my puppy and my 7 yr old cats. your dog just wants to play w/ the cat but the cat doesnt want to. you should teach your puppy to leave your cat alone until the cat gets used to the dog. its a pretty big adjustment to go through for both animals. but yeah the dog just wants to play but for now try to keep the dog from barking at your cat. its pretty stressfull for the cat.How do i know if my cat and the dog are playing friendly ?
When cats hiss, they are not playing. It sounds like the dog might be playing, but I don't think you cat is.
if the cat starts to hiss alot because if the cat hisses you know that they need to stop playing/fightingHow do i know if my cat and the dog are playing friendly ?
