What are some ways i can discourage my dog of unneccesary barking?

My Dog Bully, is a basset hound about 4 months old. Hes still a puppy. Anyways he barks all the time, for no reason, like hes trying to make us mad. He barks constantly and constantly we cant even stop him. He's always barking and if not chewing on our furniture. How can i stop him from unneccesary barking? What are some ways i can discourage my dog of unneccesary barking?
my grandparents have beagles that had that problem and they got stop barking collars that seem to work well for them.

Good luck and God bless
Go buy a can of dust off and spray it directly after he barks. Hopefully it won't encourge it but it worked for my terrier that use to bark in the same situations yours does. You just have to be consitant with it and keep it close to you when you know he may bark.

my neighbor had a can of coins and every time her dog barked she shook it by her dog's ear to get her to stop and it worked. she barely barks now
If the answer with the coins in the can doesn't work for you, you can get an "anti-bark" collar. It has an electronic zapper in it that administers a jolt to the dog's neck every time he barks. Sounds a bit cruel, I know, but it definitely stops the barking. Once they have this IMMEDIATE consequence to barking, they'll stop after a while, even with the collar off. What are some ways i can discourage my dog of unneccesary barking?
I don't know if it may work for you, but I also have 2 little barking dogs that would NEVER shut up. I tried the coins in the can, but didn't work, so I got a squirt bottle and filled it with water and everytime they barked I gave them a little squirt, and for me, it worked. So when they start in now, all I have to say is where's the bottle?, and they shut up right away. Hope it may work for you, and it isn't cruel.
Hound dogs tend to be noisy so you are battling a breed tendency. You can try to modify his barking by using a spray bottle or toss a soda can with rocks or pennies in it if outside. Bassets were bred to hunt rabbits slowly..lol..so do need more exercise than most people realize. Most hounds will happy bark when you come home or they are being fed. You may be reinforcing his barking by yelling at him when he does it which, to the dog, sounds like you are joining in. Try ignoring him by going to a diff room if he barks inside. My g/f has been debarking her dogs for about 20 yrs and has had great luck with it. She has a vet that goes thru the mouth to do it and the dog immediatly comes home and is fine. Dogs still bark just at a quieter tone that doesn't disturb the neighbors.
At 4 months a puppy should have most of it's obedience training. If it barks too much use it's training leash to make a correction. Dogs form their personalities in the first four months of their lives. This is not a time to wait and see how the dog trains itself because that's not gonna happen. Now is time to show that you are more intelligent than the puppy and give it guidance in everything. If you haven't done this before go to training classes, The best training techniques are not just common sense and will not just come to you naturally,
Tell him Ina loud and demanding voice, "NO". Sometimes a swat with a rolled up newspaper helps to get the idea across. Its not to hurt him just to get his attention and let him know your serious.
Maybe u have something that is making a noise in the house that u cant here and thats why hes barking!!!!!

Hope he stoppes barking
Before you try to discourage his barking, is there a definite reason for it? have you talked to your vet about it? how long have you had him? (does he feel safe and comfortable) does he simply want attention? since that breed in particular has an exceptional sense of smell, is something bothering him inside or out?

about the chewing, does he have lots of toys %26amp; bones, different textures and tastes? He's chewing because its normal dog behavior, and he's teething. When he starts chewing on furniture, just say NO in a stern voice and give him a toy, he will eventually get that toys are ok to chew and furniture is not. Our dogs have a "toy box" (a big plastic tub) filled with various toys and bones, from balls and stuffed toys to kongs and ropes and squeeky toys and our puppy already knows that toys are great, he rummages through it until he finds what suits him at the time and goes to town!
GINBARK answered your question.

She is 100% right on EVERYTHING.

ITS A HOUND DOG. what do you seriously expect?

I really wish people would do their research before buying a dog b/c its "cute or cool".....

And yes, bassets need exercise for reasons that are obvious.

I'd also like to add the barking may also be casued by your complete lack of doing anything with the dog. If you don't stimulate it, you have created a completely bored dog whcih will do whatever it takes to get attention.

But again, hounds bark anyways. haven't you ever been hunting?

HOUNDS = BARKING

WHY: The barking/howling let's you know from miles away where the dogs are and where the hunted animals are...
trying putting a drop of lemon juice in his mouth when ever he barks. most dogs dont like the taste
If all else fails, try taking him to a dog school. It worked for our neighbour's dog.
I have had the same problem. I have a Beagle and we graduated out of Petsmart classes. They recomended a spray bottle with water be sure to buy a new one or rinse it very well. every time he barks spray him. This isnt cruel and wont harm ur dog he just might be very very wet!

also dont use choke collars and 'cruel' stuff like that it might be that if you use it.Good luck!
Dogs bark for a reason....perhaps something is intruding into what they perceive as their territory, they hear, better then we do,so,they may hear sounds, you do not...

Some dogs intermingle with other dogs,to them it is their vocalization/communication to interact with others...various tones of barks can be heard, from deep to high pitched, all from the same dog,it just depends on what the situation warrants at that moment.

I have one dog,if someone that she believes is coming into her space, she has a deep, firm bark, while she is playing with her playmate,it is often high toned barks to actually making high pitched whines and vocal sounds, either wanting to regain the item in question or to gain the item in question she wants....and yes, while it can be loud at time,I find a dog with that much energy and a zest to communicate much better then a lump on the sofa.

while some may go to great length to stop the dogs from barking,I find some measures cruel, electronic collars come to mind,I find any that willingly electrocute their animals a bit harsh,"specially since less intrusive devices are around, scent collars....cans with coins, maybe a spray bottle, repeating with each bark,a firm no...also,rewarding the dog when the dog does not bark, instills a great response and, encourages them to do so again.
I had the same problem with my old dog and i got a tub filled wiht beads etc.. and every time he barked i shook it at him and he stopped. He still barked occasionally but no where near as much as usual. I wouldnt go with and electric collar because i knew this woman who had one on her dog and every time it barked it got a shock they ended up not bein able to pet their dog because it had made it vicious
