New 1yr old Boxer dog is bullying our big gentle softie 9yr old German Shepherd. What can we do?

The german shepherd does not threaten him at all. In fact, she is terrified of him. Have been giving her homeopathic calming pills! The boxer, for the first week just made a go at her throat at every opportunity. Thankfully under great supervision that has stopped, but the intimidation is still there. Any time Elsa moves, Frank the bully is up immediately to head her off. He ousts her from her bed also.New 1yr old Boxer dog is bullying our big gentle softie 9yr old German Shepherd. What can we do?
He is trying to establish his leadership and dominance with her and with you.

you need to stop him and correct him.

one way is to master the walk with both of them.

you need to exercise Frank daily, about an hour or so.

and Elsa as well, needs to go on these walks to establish pack leadership, and he needs to learn his place in the pack.

when he goes at her, it's your responsibility to stop and correct him BEFORE he starts at her.

at the first sign, you stop him.

keep on a leash for easy reach and correction.

always be calm and assertive when handling and training. NEVER yell or hit a dog, this just confirms to them you are not a leader, and just a follower.

when walking the dogs, only stop for peeing and pooping, no bushes, treees hydrants or other dogs. NO STOPPING! at all. you need to drain excess energy from him, and the walk will also calm and relax him, and unlock the mind, allowing for training and handling.

the dogs are to walk beside or behind. NEVER in front of you. the front is for leaders, and if you are not a leader, then you are a ..... follower. get it?

use a collar for training, such as a gentle leader, halti, or the Illusion collar by cesar milan. if you are going to use a choker, or any of the collars above, be sure to use them correctly. the foolproof one for those just beginning would be the illusion collar or the gentle leader. but if you don't have the much experience, go with the illusion collar. use a muzzle if you think he will attack during the walk or at home. for training purposes. use until he no longer lunges at her, also at classes.

sign up for obedience class for you, all family members and both dogs. this will keep training consistent with everyone in the household, and not confuse the situation.

the obedience class is for you to understand their needs and meet them, and also, for the dogs to socialize, and bond with you.

for more tips, visit cesar milan's website, watch his show or read one of his books on dog behavior, rehabilitating dogs and training owners. very good resource...

good luck
Either go to obediant school.

Or

Find another home for Frank. Because you can't get rid of your 9 year old Elsa. Frank is still young so you probably don't have to give him up, just find professional training. Because I would hate to hear that the young pup killed the beloved older dog.

Good luck with Frank.New 1yr old Boxer dog is bullying our big gentle softie 9yr old German Shepherd. What can we do?
I think the Boxer needs some major discipline. When I first introduced a puppy to my dog she was always trying to bullying him and not let him have any toys or bones or sleep on his dog bed. I made sure that she HAD to share toys, bones, beds, ect. I would make her sit and stay while he was allowed to play w/ a toy or bone. But I also always made sure to have 2 of everything and give plenty of attention to both. But whoever is doing the bullying definetly needs to be told "NO" and disciplined when he is being aggressive. If you see him start to get up when the other dog does, tell him "NO" and make him stay. It's going to take time and patience but it is fixable.
MOVE THE DOGS AWAY FROM EACH OTHERNew 1yr old Boxer dog is bullying our big gentle softie 9yr old German Shepherd. What can we do?
Time to find a good trainer who will help teach you guys how to handle this.
I would start by a bit of training.

Get your boxer on a leash and walk by your GSD. the minute you sense an attack Pull tough on the leash and firmly say NO! do it untill your boxer understands not to attack the GSD. this should be helpfull

good luck.
