How to stop my dog from being a bully?

I rescued my dog from petfinder about 2 1/2 months ago,She is a fantastic dog, an American Staff. Terrier mix about 2 years old.

As soon as we got her we socialized her with people, and with other dogs as much as we could, I recently found a dog park kind of close to our town, so we have been going up there once a week or so for the past month... the first few times she was great, but last week i brought her up there and she was being a bully, i couldn't tell if she was tiring to fight or if she was just playing hard, it was weird. Later that day we went to introduce her to a 4 year old dog that has never meet any other dog. so my boyfriend kept her on a VERY short leash when they meet, almost too short for her to smell the other dog, then she growled and almost bit the other dog....

This is very strange behavior for her as far as we know, what can i do to help her be friendlier to other dogs? How to stop my dog from being a bully?
Wariness of other dogs is a pit trait. It is your job as the leader to not allow her to engage in a fight, but you can't hold their dog aggression against them because it is innate. It's great that you are going into obedience classes.. that will help a lot. It will at least teach her how to behave nicely around other dogs, but you can't really change a dog's temperament toward other dogs.

Your best bet would be to take her to a formal obedience class. There will not only be other dogs there in a controlled environment but you'll also get the benefit of a professional trainer to help you with this issue.

The best thing to do is show her when she's being good. To show her what she has done is good, reward her with a treat. If she disobeys you, you can lock her in her cage for a little while, or you can take your hand and hit her snout with slight force. It's not abuse to hit their snout. They feel it, but it's not like, extreme horrid pain for them.

If this behavior continues, you can find a dog obedience trainer, depending on where you live, and that should help. :)
we have 2 pit mix rescues and know what youre feeling. However, the best way to socialize a bully breed is in obedience classes. They were bred to fight other dogs and though most pits that are available on petfinder havent had fighting backgrounds, most bullies still arent huge on every other dog they meet. Plus female bullies can be real bitches. Mine is very selective of her doggy playmates. You shouldnt hold it against her, as this is a breed trait, but she should still be able to walk past other dogs and at least ignore them. An obedience class really is your best way though to teach your dog how to act around other dogs. Check out www.badrap.org and pbrc.net for more info on this issue. Good luck and thanks for adopting a bully!
