No, I don't think so. Hopefully any human-aggression that the more badly-bred bully dogs have will be able to be mostly bred out, but dog aggression? No. They've been specifically bred for hundreds of years to have that very temperament.
And honestly, I don't really think that it -should- be bred out? Bully breed owners (who are educated about their breeds) may have a very different opinion than I do, however, I would compare it to breeding the herding instinct out of Aussies or BCs -- this is [was] the breed's purpose -- as a herding breed owner, and a dog enthusiast, I hate to see instinct being bred out of dogs simply to fit into today's society a little easier.
There are 400+ dog breeds out there -- if someone wants a dog that isn't dog aggressive, it's not hard to find one.
I think it's possible with widespread bans on irresponsible owners and allowing only those that are ready and willing to train and only breed dogs that are of excellent temperment. Will that happen? Most likely not. It would be too much work on the law and other jobs to constantly monitor to see whether someone is responsible enough to socialize, check for temperment, etc.
Even though I understand Poppy's point and she made a respectful and good argument on her side, I disagree. I wish the dog aggression would be bred out of them. I've met too many people who will not monitor their dogs and say how "with proper training pits are great with other dogs". If pits are natually dog aggressive should they be off leash at a dog park since it is in their dna? Should they be put down at shelters when they are going to have to be caged with 5 other dogs because they can't be trusted? What if they escape outside a door for a minute only to encounter another dog? No, not all pits are like this of course.
In some places dog fighting is illegal. Should they still be bred for a trait that has no use? One that only society will condemn and make them that much harder to give a home to?DS:do you think dog aggression will ever be bred out bully breeds?
Right now there is a serious problem with the average pit bull walking down the street. Most of these dogs should not be alive. I am going to get TD's for this, but the average pit bull walking down the street has not been bred properly and has a history of bad dogs behind it.
It depends -- I suppose it is possible, but remember with each successive generation, 1/2 the DNA is lost... and you can't "get it back" without breeding back to older dogs or using frozen semen.
It could do wonders for breeding it out to use semen from excellent tempered dogs of the past.
If the dogs are bred to standard,no.It should not be bred out.It is very much a part of these breeds and breeding out specific traits like this is going to have impact elsewhere.Other attributes and tendencies will likely be changed or lost as well.
These breeds belong only in the hands of those that are aware of these traits and know how to manage them. That will solve much more than removing a trait that wasn't a problem for more than a century.DS:do you think dog aggression will ever be bred out bully breeds?
Well you take the dog aggressive out of the bully and you no longer have a bully, you have some other breed.
It would be like taking the retriever out of a lab or a golden, or the hound of a blood hound, it simply wouldn't be the same dog.
Oh yeah it can be.
Tbh I'm not sure how I feel about it. It's taking something essential out of the breed. on the other hand, it's not needed anymore. Evolution would naturally kick in if this was a behavior in the wild that was no longer beneficial.
Anyway...
Again Poppy, you make a great point lol
Any dog can be aggresive like when they train dogs for fighting. A pitbull puppy isn't born aggresive. With training, it can be a fun, loving dog and most responsible owners understand that.
